Unplugging for the Sisterhood: Why Women Need the National Day of Unplugging

Are you juggling multiple cell phones and finding it difficult to have a meaningful conversation without updating your social media story? With our eyes glued to screens, we often miss out on the valuable moments of our lives and real-life connections. If you recognize these habits in yourself or those around you, this article is for you.

On the first Friday in March, we celebrate the National Day of Unplugging, a 24-hour period where we unplug from our electronics, social media, and all things digital. And let’s be honest, as women, we’re probably more addicted to our phones and social media than anyone else. So, in honor of this day of unplugging, during Women’s History Month let’s take a closer look at why we need it, and some creative ways to spend our time offline.

First and foremost, why is it so important to unplug? For starters, our constant connection to technology can be detrimental to our mental health. Social media can be a breeding ground for comparison, insecurity, and FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out). Not to mention, the blue light from our screens can disrupt our sleep patterns and affect our overall well-being. Unplugging gives us a chance to reset, recharge, and focus on the present moment.

Now, let’s talk about some ways to spend our time without technology. The possibilities are endless! You could start by doing something as simple as taking a walk outside. Take in the sights, sounds, and smells of nature without the distraction of notifications and alerts. Or, if you’re feeling creative, try a new craft like knitting, painting, or drawing. Tap into your inner artist and let your imagination run wild.

Maybe you’re in the mood to connect with others.

Try hosting a game night with your friends or family. Break out the board games or cards and have some good old-fashioned fun. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, plan a day trip to a nearby town or city. Explore a new place, try new foods, and make memories with your loved ones. Or go play some hoops, and look cute! Whatever you want to do.

If you’re looking for a way to pamper yourself, indulge in some self-care. Take a long, luxurious bath with candles and relaxing music. Treat yourself to a mani-pedi at Stewart Beauty & Barber Boutique if you are in the Columbus, Ohi area, or go to your favorite spa. Read a book, Join a group and network online, grab that great book idea outline and dust it off or simply catch up on some much-needed sleep. The possibilities are endless when it comes to taking care of yourself without technology. Self-care is a MUST!

Now, I know what you’re thinking. “But how am I supposed to function without my phone?!” Don’t worry, there are plenty of ways to stay on track without technology. Try using a physical planner or calendar to keep track of your schedule. Write down your to-do list on a piece of paper instead of relying on a digital note-taking app. You might be surprised how much more focused and productive you are without the constant distractions of technology.

The National Day of Unplugging is a much-needed reminder for us all to take a break from technology and focus on ourselves and the world around us. As women, we are often pulled in a million different directions and it can be difficult to prioritize our own well-being. But taking a break from technology is a simple way to reset and recharge so that we can be our best selves.

So, this Women’s History Month, let’s celebrate the badass women who came before us, and take some time to unplug and connect with ourselves and the world around us. Whether you’re spending time with loved ones, indulging in self-care, or simply enjoying the great outdoors, there are endless ways to spend your time without technology. So put down your phone, grab a friend, and let’s celebrate the National Day of Unplugging together. While I get the idea, it defeats the purpose to take a picture of yourself holding the "I Unplug To _____ " Sign below, tomorrow. Do it tonight. Here's a template! Print it out!
